Wikihow.com is a website that provides free how-to resources on a variety of topics ranging from computers and electronics to pets and animals. The site depends mostly on the written contributions of its members who can edit and maintain existing articles, and write new articles on the site. The site seeks to provide high quality articles and therefore provides a detailed guideline for writers on how to create and edit written content. The writer guide can be accessed from the ‘Getting Started’ section on the homepage or from the ‘Write an Article’ section at the top of every page.
Due to the collaborative nature of this site, any article on any topic can be edited by anyone, including unregistered visitors, as long as the article isn’t locked.
The homepage provides a featured article section, a random article generator, and a navigation section with links to a detailed tour of the site, the site forums, and the ‘Suggest a Topic’ area; these areas can be accessed without signing up to the site. The ‘Editing Tools’ and ‘My Pages’ areas of the site can only be accessed by registered users.
This site is available in several different languages other than English, such as Arabic, Spanish, German, French, Dutch and Portuguese. However, the number of articles varies according to how many contributors there are in each language version. Registered members can start other language versions of the site by clicking on the language project they’re interested in and signing their name. The project will begin once there are enough active editors willing to work on that language project. This area can be accessed by clicking on the ‘your language’ link within the WikiHow in other languages section on the homepage.
