Wikipedia is a free content site with more than 2,700,000 articles on a wide variety of subjects. All content is written by volunteers and may be edited by anyone without reserve. It is necessary to create a user account to create an original article. The online encyclopedia is available in more than 200 languages, but not all articles are available in every language.

The home page offers a featured article and a featured picture. Other home page features are; ‘On this day in history’ and ‘Did you know’ in traditional newspaper style. A visitor can create an account, use the search box, or access other information via links. Articles may be perused by general category.

Wikipedia articles are very informative and the majority of them cite sources. However; the open editing format precludes the information found on this site from being 100% reliable. There are some protections in place to revert back to previous versions in the event of vandalism. Although an account is not necessary to edit a page an anonymous user will have their IP address displayed, encouraging users to create an account.

Links to sister projects are found on the home page. These include a dictionary/thesaurus, a collection of quotations and a directory of species among others. These projects are all free content sites sponsored by the Wikimedia Foundation.
