Slashdot.org is a self-proclaimed website for nerds, sporting stories on video games, books, Apple, Linux, hardware, science, and other “nerd” subjects. The site is largely, if not entirely, submission-based. Readers can find science, technology, or other “nerdy” articles or stories on other websites, then go to the Submission Bin, type in the URL, and describe it. The moderators of the site will then consider the story, and if they deem it worthy, they will post it on the main site. The FAQ makes it perfectly clear that you must provide an actual URL, provide an understandable subject line, and describe the story clearly for it to be accepted. If you want to view pages with no ads, you have to purchase a subscription. You can also check out the Slashboxes, or content boxes including links and more, on the right. Current Slashboxes include links to various programs to download, a login Slashbox, links to random videos, polls, tags, and book reviews. The links to the programs are to a partner site of slashdot.org’s called freshmeat.net, hence the title of the box. The site also provides many FAQs on various types of code in a subpage called slashcode.com, the link to which is in the FAQ section.
