Star Fall was founded in 2002 by Stephen Schutz. Since then Star Fall has been made possible through the vision of the Polis-Schutz family. Schutz, as a child, struggled to learn to read English. As a result, Schutz turned to the Internet and conceived a program that would be available online across the world to all children who are learning to read English. The website itself is divided into four main steps. The first step is ABCs Let’s get ready to read. The ABCs page offers an interactive alphabet that offers pronunciation of the letter and the sound it makes within a word. The Learn to Read section offers an interactive set of activities that allow a child to create words using base roots such as “an” and letters. For example F and “an” make “fan.” The third level of Star Fall, It’s Fun to Read, offers interactive reading material for children. The activities consist of simple reading material with links that allow the reader to hear the pronunciation of each word individually or the entire passage together. The final stage of learning to read on the Star Fall website is more reading. The exercises offered in stage four are similar to those offered in stage three. However, stage four reading material is longer than stage three.
