ImageShack is an image hosting service based out of California that hosts a wide variety of image formats, including JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIF, TIFF and PDF formats. Pictures can be shared with friends, posted to message boards and blogs, or used as direct links on websites. The website boasts over 25 million users a month worldwide and appeals to a wide demographic group.
The service is free and easy to use. Images must be smaller than 1.5 megabytes. After uploading, the user is given a number of URLs to choose from when posting the link containing the image or sharing the link with friends. The URL’s are not listed in search engines (no-follow links), so the image can only be found by whoever the image holder allows to see the images. The only limitations are on bandwidth: users can only upload up to 300 MB per hour. If an image is not accessed for over one year, the image is deleted from the website’s database.
Once uploaded, users can edit images in a number of different ways, including adding borders, creating slideshows, including captions and titles and even adding sound.
The service has links to a number of in-house and third party applications, including toolbars, image editing software plug-ins, an extension for Firefox users and applications for uploading images directly from a desktop. The website also includes a blog for tips and techniques concerning image uploads.
