Free Cycle is a website created so the people of Tucson, Arizona by a team of recyclers. As the team of recyclers drove around with perfectly good items there were to be thrown away they decided to drive around to local nonprofit organizations and see if they could use them. After some thought the owners decided that the internet was a better way to distribute these recycles so that they do not have to drive around in vain any more. Today, the concept has spread to over 85 countries and represents millions of people. The website is very simple. It features only text except for the organizations logo which is text art. The main feature of the web site is its search bar. The search bar, however, does not perform standard searches, instead it searches for a Free Cycle group near you. The website also has seven tabs from which the visitor can navigate. The tabs are labeled Home, Browse Groups, FAQ, About Free Cycle, Donate, Store, and Sponsors. The website also lists the organizations top sponsors at the bottom of the web site’s home page; King and Spalding, Nokia, and Waste Management. To help promote the organization, it sells tee shirts, coffee mugs and totes.
