The site acknowledges the controversy surrounding the precise definition of anime and states, "For all purposes related to Anime News Network, anime is animation that is primarily produced and conceived in Japan.". A similar statement is posted onsite regarding manga.
The home page displays multiple time-stamped articles by date. Some recent articles are featured along with recent press releases and reviews. The full article pages display the original source of the article and presents link options to the user to bookmark the article using popular social networking applications, or discuss the article in the site's forums.
A tabbed category link list on the home pages includes news, views, encyclopedia, video, forum and myANN. Most of the  categories also display an expanded link list of more specific areas inside that category. Registered users may particpate in forums and submit articles and/or reviews to be considered for posting on the site. Registered users also may submit data for the site's encylopedia.
