Alexa was launched on April 1996. What Alexa does is build a database of information about sites that include statistics, related links, and more. The website is divided into six different tabs labeled Home, Top Sites, Site Info, Hot Urls, Toolbar, and For Site Owners. On the home page one can find a line graph titled “Movers & Shakers.” This graph represents sites which have “zoomed” up in the Alexa rankings over the past week. Below that one can find the top ten hottest pages on the web at the time being. Lastly the home page provides a section titled “Blog” and a Web Directory. The “Blog” section allows the visitor to see the last three blog entries made. The Web Directory allows the user to see the listings of tops sites based on category. The Top Sites tab allows the visitor to view the list of the top five hundred sites on the web. The Site Info tab allows the visitors to research website information by typing in a category and searching by keyword or by specific site lookup. The Hot Urls tab shows the viewer the top Urls according to the Alexa Toolbar which can be downloaded to help Alexa in its research by clicking on the tab labeled Toolbar. The For Site Owners tab provides site owners with tools such as Edit Your Site Data (allows the site owner to update information about their site if there is problems in the listings), Site Widgets (places Alexa data on your site), Custom Toolbar (creates a custom Alexa toolbar free), and Alexa Data (integrates data into your site or service).
