4chan is an image-based bulletin board where users can post comments and share images. The collaborative-community format is copied from a Japanese forum, Futaba Channel. This site appears to be an attempt to reach an international audience, though there is a tab with Japanese characters. The site is easy to maneuver, and feature links to different discussion boards which cover a wide range of interests, including Japanese Culture (Anime and Manga, Flash and general topics about Japan, Auto, Comics and Cartoons, Technology, Traditional Games and Mecha (walking vehicles controlled by a pilot); Creative (Food, Wallpapers, Origami, Music, Fashion, Toys and Photography; Adult and Miscellaneous. The Adult Tab is 18+, but the Toys section in Creative is also 18+, as is the miscellaneous section. The Other section includes Travel, Health, and the Paranormal, though that has more to do with users posting images and rants rather than anything to do with the paranormal. Users do not need to register a username before participating in the community, nor is any attempt made to ascertain the ages of users. This is potentially troublesome, as even tabs that are not classed as Adult only contain adult images, such as Toys and Health and Fitness. The Weapons section contained a (hopefully imagined) first person account of murder, and the Swastika appears on the site at least once. For this reviewer there is a stark contrast between the brightly colored and interesting home page and the dull and often pointless boards within.
